- Catherine Mathews, daughter of James Mathews and Hannah Strong, was born about 1764 in Orange county New York. She was married to Matthew Carpenter about 1780, and they made their home in Elmira, Chemung county New York. Carpenter served as a Brigader General during the War of 1812, with Catherine Mathews' brother Selah Mathews his next in command. He was prominent in his community, and served several terms in the New York Assembly. The Carpenters raised a large family. Identified children:
Catherine Carpenter (1786-1817); married Robert Lawrence in 1805.
Hannah Carpenter (1788-1865); married Finley McClure in 1808, and removed to Elgin Illinois.
Jane Howell Carpenter (1791-1860); married Philo Jones and lived in Southport New York.
Julia Carpenter (1792-1856); married William Wisner (Presbyterian Pastor), and resided primarily in Ithaca New York.
Elijah Carpenter (1793-1864); married Elvira Baldwin and lived in Elmira New York.
Eliza Matthews Carpenter (1797-1872); married Erastus Shepard in 1817.
Vincent Matthews Carpenter (1798-1860); He died in Dansville New York.
Amira Carpenter (b. 1799); married Robert Thompson.
Sarah "Sally" Carpenter (1801-1873); married Mister Campbell in 1823.
Caroline Amelia Carpenter (1806-1881); married Horace Howell, and lived in Rushville New York.
Benjamin Franklin Carpenter (1809-1869); wife Mary; resided in Ithaca New York.

Major General Matthew Carpenter; 26 Sept 1759 to 6 October 1839; 79y 12m 10d; Revolutionary War Soldier. Died in the 81st year of his age. (Towner read gravestone in the Fall, 1875. Remains removed to Woodlawn in 1876. Boyd read marker in 3/1977.)
