Notes |
- Hannah Mathews was born about 1768 at Matthewsfield in Orange county New York, daughter of James Mathews and Hannah Strong. As a young woman she removed with her family to Elmira, Chemung county New York, and this is where she likely met, and married Lebbeus Tubbs about the year 1795. Lebbeus Tubbs was born about 1762, while his family was living briefly in Nova Scotia. He was the second in line to carry his name. He grew up primarily in Connecticut, and like his future wife, removed with his family to Elmira, Chemung county New York as a young man. He served in the War of 1812, under his brother-in-law General Matthew Carpenter - making a brief foray west, where they likely saw no action.
Hannah Mathews and Lebbeus Tubbs were the parent of six identified children:
Lebbeus Tubbs (1795-1882); married Hannah Medaugh.
Bridget Tubbs (1799-1864); married Stephen Goldsmith.
Bathsheba Tubbs (1804-1885); Almond C Kenyon.
Betsy Tubbs (b. 1806); married Jamison Kenyon.
Sally Tubbs (1808-1886); Alexander Anderson.
James Tubbs (1812-1888); Charlotte Bailey.
The family eventually made their home at Southport in Chemung county New York, where Lebbeus Tubbs died in 1843, and Hannah Mathews Tubbs followed in 1854. She was ninety years of age.
